captains log
Not a big update, but I wanted to log this before I forget. Just planted 3 clematis, two Barbara Jackman and one Nelly Moser. Also picked up a Salvia Nemorosa at Lowes for a dollar, going to try and overwinter it in a pot until I can figure out where I want to put it. I love those purple Salvias! I haven't gotten around to taking too many pictures, but the garden is just too hot for me right now, and not looking its best anyways. Here's one from earlier in the summer as my Fireball Hibiscus started really blooming. It was spectacular, I can't believe how big it got when I had just bought a 6 inch pot last year.

Wow, way to go with that hibiscus! Those are some of the biggest flowers ive ever seen! I think we are all kind of house bound from the heat right now, but it won't be too long before we get a little relief and can get back to the garden.
ReplyDeleteThanks Darcia! They really were gigantic, especially at the beginning of the season, truly dinner plate sized. That lasted for about a month and a half, now they are still large, but not gigantic like in the above picture. I put a ton of compost down in the spring, and I'm wondering if I would need to do more fertilizing to keep the giant blooms, or if its just how things naturally would play out and I should leave well enough alone.
ReplyDeleteWow, that bloom is huge! We planted salvia too, it's so pretty.
ReplyDeleteIn addition to our fall snow peas, we planted radishes, buttercrunch lettuce, carrots and cucumbers. I don't think the cucumbers will make it though, we'll see. I think I started the seedlings too late.
ReplyDeleteHi Jen...what a gorgeous Hibiscus. Such a vibrant colour, too. Lucky you (I'm a non-Hibiscus Zone 5-er). I just happened by via Nancy Bond's Leaping Greenly blog. Love your site.
ReplyDeleteHi Deborah, thanks for the comment! Actually, both my Hibiscus are VERY hardy! The Fantasia is supposed to be hardy to zone 5 and the Fireball is hardy to zone 4. They might be worth checking out for you, I got them both from Plant Delights. Not sure how they would fit in otherwise in your climate, but at least for the cold hardiness, they should be ok!
ReplyDeleteI love the huge red hibiscus! I just planted my first on in my new garden spot late in the summer and she is blooming this late. I have named her: Heidi Biscut. Welcome to Blotanica. I, too, am new and just love visiting everyone's gardens. I will be back.
